Since September 2013, the government has provided additional funding to enhance the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding—jointly provided by the Department for Education, the Department of Health, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport—is allocated to primary school headteachers based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6.
Our vision
For all pupils to leave primary school physically literate and equipped with the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to lead healthy, active lives and to participate in physical activity and sport throughout their lives.
Our objective
To secure self‑sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport across the school. We aim to embed practices that will continue to benefit pupils long after the funding has been spent.
Key indicators of improvement
We work towards the following outcomes:
- Increased engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity, supporting healthy, active lifestyles.
- A raised profile of PE and sport across the school, contributing to whole‑school improvement.
- Improved confidence, knowledge and skills of staff in teaching PE and sport.
- A broader range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
- Higher participation in competitive sport.
